Few things make my family feeling more excited than travel and durians. What's more impressive than combining both together into a trip to a durian farm in Bilut (about half an hour drive from more well-known Bentong while Bentong itself can be reached easily with an hour drive)? Apparently an overnight stay in durian farm is a "hit" thing among locals nowadays.
Kick start your day with a visit to Bentong Morning Market. Popular local produce include Bentong gingers, tau fu pok and soy sauce. Hunt for some good food nearby after you are done with your early morning shopping. Keep reading to find out our food reviews on selected eateries! After satisfying your stomachs, we recommend a visit to the famous Lover's Waterfall before checking in your accommodation in the afternoon. There starts your 2-day-1-night stay in Bilut Hill. :)
Lastly, I would like apologise that the quality of the photos here as all pictures were captured using my Vivo V11 phone, instead of our usual DSLR which was left behind somewhere. I believe my DSLR would have done a much better job T.T
Accommodation
We selected "Bilut Hill" because of the good reviews provided by my dad's friend who had paid a visit some time before. C-suite was picked in the end to accommodate 10 of us.
However, the photo below was not the one we stayed in, but our neighbouring suite which can fit less people. It was difficult to capture the entire view of our villa, so I thought this photo would do justice to showcase the outer appearance of the legendary 玻璃屋 or glasshouse in English.
(+) Huge portion for BBQ dinner, good facilities (free KTV, pool table, arcade game machine and mahjong table)
(-) The glasshouse gets very warm during daytime even with air-con turned on, washrooms are separated from the house, small and cramped rooms
Top level of glasshouse.
The reservation of KTV room is based on first come first serve basis. Suggest to make your booking with the staff upon checking in.
You can choose to have steamboat or BBQ for dinner. Apart from the ingredients shown in the picture, we were also served with fried bee hoon and fruit cordials.
Food
Yuan Kee Coffee Shop 源记茶餐室
Address: 57, Jalan Chui Yin, Bentong, Pahang.
Opening hours: 7am to 11pm (Closed on Wed); however, wanton mee and yong tau fu are only available until noon time.
A very popular coffee shop in Bentong that the wait can be crazy to get a table. Queue system doesn't work here, you just have to eye on a table and patiently wait for the patrons to leave. Ordering can be chaotic too. There are multiple stalls here but most people will go for wanton mee as their first choice. However, I would say that the yong tau fu impressed me even more and was the star of our meal, highly recommended!
Guang Xi Yong Tau Fu or 广西酿料. Totally in love! Something new to me, stuffing mystery as I couldn't tell the key ingredients. You have to try yourselves to find out the difference with the normal Yong Tau Fu :)
Yummy wanton mee from Hooi Kee (开记). Their specialty is definitely the springy noodles that are different from the ordinary wanton noodles used in other stalls.
Bentong Tau Fu Sdn Bhd 文东豆腐店
Address: 85, Jalan Chui Yin, Bentong, Pahang.
What is the first thing that comes to your mind when Bentong is mentioned? I believe most people will answer ginger! You can certainly buy some fresh Bentong-grown gingers in the morning market. They are literally sold everywhere in Bentong. Apart from ginger, another must-buy items from Bentong will be beancurds and tao pok.
After the long-winded intro, let me introduce you the beancurds in Bentong. The little shop is located few shops away from Yuan Kee Coffee Shop. You will spot the queue from far. What makes the beancurd special here is the ginger syrup, so fragrant and yummy!
The ginger syrup is thick and rich, complementing the smooth tau fu hwa. My tummy was screaming satisfaction!
Kow Po Ice Cream Shop
Address: 2 Bentong Heights, 28700 Bentung, Pahang.
Opening hours: 10.30am to 7.30pm daily
A very old school ice-cream shop that is usually packed with tourists (no kidding). The homemade ice-cream came in various flavours and was rich in taste, winning everyone's heart. However, I find its combination with cendol/ABC rather underwhelming. My review could be biased as we were too full to provide accurate comments on the taste.
Kedai Kopi Poh Hin 保兴茶室
Address: 332D, Lurah Bilut 28800, Bentong, 28800 Pahang.
In spite of its humble appearance, the food served here was of high quality and value for money. Our absolute favourite dishes include crispy fried pork and ginger steamed fish.
Bonus round in Bukit Tinggi- Wonderland Valley Restaurant 桃源谷餐厅
Address: Lot 9253, Kampung Bukit Tinggi, 28750 Bentong, Pahang.
Opening hours: 11am to 10pm daily
On our way back to KL, we stopped by this well-hidden restaurant for lunch. Very nice ambiance to dine in. Due to its popularity, the waiting time can be long, be it the queue to get a table or the wait for the food to be served. However, the food here is so tasty that you will forgive the wait. We love all the signature dishes on their menu; it'll never go wrong to follow the recommendations.
Attractions
Chamang Waterfall /Lover’s Waterfall Fell in love with this tranquil place immediately despite not having high expectation prior to the visit. The water was clean and cooling. A pretty good place to chill and have some family time. However, please be careful and stay safe as there have been many tragic accidents happened before.
Durian feasting
Only Mao Shan Wang and D24 were available and they were claimed to be organic. The prices per kg fluctuate everyday but generally the most attractive prices appear on Sundays (compared to Fridays and Saturdays). The prices per kg of Mao Shan Wang were RM40 and RM35 per kg, respectively, on the Saturday and Sunday of our visit. The main contributory reason is the demand. Since most visitors will leave the farm on Sundays, therefore it makes sense for the owner to drop the prices slightly on Sunday to entice the buyers. We could further infer that the durian prices will be even cheaper on weekdays when there are few visitors.
Irresistible flavours. I am missing durians so much while typing this post.
