Bangkok 4 - Thai food spams!

Eating is probably one of the best things you can do in Thailand, other than shopping and massage. My previous post talks about our cafe journey in Bangkok, and now we will move on to some local delicacies that you should not miss.

Chatuchak Market
While it's more well-known as a shopping paradise, most people might not be aware that Chatuchak is a great place for food lovers too (good news to all the boyfriends and husbands). Below are some of the street food we tried in the market. Cheap and good! Fret not, we didn't get any diarrhea afterwards.

Refreshing coconut ice-cream.

Stalls selling king octopus were common in Chatuchak Market. Couldn't go wrong with any and I especially enjoyed the spicy sauce that came with a tinge of balancing sourness.

It's okay to have some processed food once in a while :P I think they were either steamed or boiled and later served with some flavourful sauce that did the magic.

Had been looking for some tender, juicy grilled pork but these were just too cold. Would taste better if the seller actually heated them up for us.

These were indeed better as they were freshly grilled after we placed the order.

Chinatown
Speaking of street food in Bangkok, who could pay no heed to Chinatown? Even the locals enjoy hunting great food there, especially during weekends, according to my local friend, Jan. Continue reading to find out what Jan had brought us to when we met up. :)

First up was the main highlight of the day - peppery pig's organ soup with roasted pork and broad rice sheets (not sure how to describe these). My friend queued for about 45 minutes for these! And those in the queue were mainly locals. Great comfort food but the portion was small, which could be a good thing such that we could try out more dishes!

Bird's nest dessert. If you are wondering how much it costs, the answer is 200THB. Well, the taste was good but whether I would be willing to spend on another bowl, hmm, maybe not.

Boiled cockles and mussels. Again, the sauce was the real killer here.

These crispy thai pancakes came in sweet (coconut) and savoury (not quite sure what were added). Eggs were the common ingredient nonetheless. Personally I prefer the sweet version over the savoury one.

Chinese-styled grilled lamb. Love the seasonings.

Fish Maw Soup. It seemed like we had been savouring "atas" or high-end food, haha. The special thing was chicken blood was added.

Som Tam Nua
Moving to restaurants, I shall start with our very first meal in Bangkok. There are multiple branches of Som Tam Nua and the one we ended up was located in Central World. Surprisingly affordable meal here for the high quality of food.

Highly recommend the fish here, very nicely cooked.

Som Tam translates to papaya salad in English. Hence, how could you miss their signature dish? While the salad looked pretty harmless, it's really spicy yet pleasing at the same time.

Siam Seafood Restaurant
Address: 919 Shibuya Prutunum 6Th Floor, Petchburi Road, Thanon Phaya Thai, Ratchathewi, Bangkok 10400, Thailand. [Putting the address here to highlight that it's located at 6th floor in view of the misleading signboard at Level 1.]

If you are looking for a dining place with nice ambiance, this is definitely not the right place. I would say it's part of the hawker centre, rather than a standalone restaurant. The restaurant serves a good variety of local dishes at rather affordable prices.

Creamy tom yum soup.

This stir-fried glass noodles were a blast! Very flavourful.

Our first (and only) green curry in Bangkok. Way too spicy to my liking.

Inter Restaurant
Another humble restaurant that serves terrific Thai food. A rare gem in Siam area (as you don't usually get cheap eats around) to satisfy your empty stomach. Not going to elaborate further as this place is basically recommended by almost every food website. The only downside is it's always flooded by tourists.

Pineapple fried rice. Simple but comforting.

My favourite dish here - roasted duck in red curry. Perfect match with the rice noodles. Must-try, you have my words!

Last but not least, introducing this authentic Thai restaurant - Ban Khun Mae! Also located in Siam area, this restaurant falls into the mid- to higher price ranges, with a lavish interior and warm ambiance.

The happiest thing in Bangkok was having fish everyday.

I could eat this mango sticky rice over and over again.

Okay, my sharing on good food shall stop here. The one below was the only place that I wouldn't really recommend anyone going!

Le Sky Rooftop Bar and Bistro
So we were looking for a nice rooftop bar to relax for the night, and we found this 50% deal on Eatigo. Another reason for selecting this place was its convenient location near to Chatuchak, where we were before this. If you are looking for cheap alcohol, nope, you are in the wrong place. If you are craving for good food, nope, please see my review below. The good things were the breezy environment and awesome live music... And the place was absolutely not crowded, even on a Friday night.

This was exceptionally dry, in an unpleasant way.

The Tom Yum Pasta tasted odd and was overly spicy. The pork in lime sauce was terribly spicy as well. The only edible food here were the fried chicken wings, but I have to comment that they were too oily.
