While I am not a good saver, I don't willingly pay for a hefty bill on food either. Nonetheless, I always believe that life needs a proper sense of ceremony to keep us going. For special occasions, I wouldn't mind spending a bit more and this dinner was one of those meant for a special celebration, hehe...
First of all, a brief introduction about Singapore Restaurant Week. It is held twice a year, organised by DiningCity, a world-famous dining guide that offers instant reservation service for premium restaurants in Singapore, Hong Kong and China. Singapore Restaurant Week features a wide range of specially curated lunch and dinner set menus from renowned restaurants at affordable prices (compared to usual prices charged).
It's advisable to make your reservation early once you have your pick. Only limited choices were left when we started browsing the night before our planned dinner date. Fortunately, we managed to snatch the last dining slot available for Wakanui, albeit at 8.30pm, which was much later than my usual dinner timing.
Address: 5 Straits View, Marina One (West Tower, #04-02 The Heart, 018935.
Opening time: 11.30am to 3pm, 5.30 to 10.30pm daily
Located at Marina One West Tower level 4, I was highly impressed by its chic glass exterior resembling a glass capsule as well as the surrounding lush greenery and modern grey architecture. In fact, I like the "green" design concept of the entire Marina One building, such an interesting place to explore.
Back to the restaurant, it specialises in premium charcoal-grilled New Zealand steak and lamb, but with Japanese influences in the flavours. The menu is straightforward, well, everyone comes here for the signature grilled meat. From today until 28 Mar 2021, Wakanui is offering a dinner tasting menu as part of Singapore Restaurant Week at $78 per pax. It is inclusive of a free flow of bread served with butter, 2 appetisers, a main course of choice (lamb or steak), and a dessert of choice (pavlova or sorbet). We tried everything on the menu and will be providing a short review below.
First time at Marina One and I adored it, such a chic place! Also loving my new lace dress from MDS.
Green Asparagus.
The citrus sauce with the right amount of sourness went well with the asparagus, and walnut sprinkles added crunchiness to the appetiser. Great start to the dinner and I started looking forward to more surprises to come.
Chestnut and Annou Potato.
Well-presented dish. Overpowering sweetness from rich, well-aged Annou sweet potatoes. To my disappointment, the black truffles tasted rather bland and didn't seem to level up the taste.
Canterbury Grass-fed Fillet (150 g), served with fresh watercress.
The steak was good, though it was outshined by the lamb dish that I would be sharing about in a moment. Please also note that the portion could be small for guys. Both meat dishes are served with sea salt, WAKANUI sauce and wasabi (surprisingly good despite our initial doubts), allowing us to savour the natural taste of the cuts.
Spring Lamb (half rack), served with fresh watercress.
I would rate this as the best dish of the day. The lamb was extremely tender and juicy without a gamey taste. It was grilled to perfection (medium-rare was recommended), and I honestly think that dipping sauces are not needed. You may use your hand to truly enjoy the dish; wet towels are kindly provided.
Pavlova.
I shall admit that I am never a fan of meringue-based desserts. I took a few spoonfuls and decided that I still don't like pavlova. Meanwhile, my boyfriend enjoyed the chewy-crisp texture on top and finished the entire plate, so I assume it's well-made?
Mandarin Orange Sorbet with Almond Sponge.
Yup, I am biased. It was a refreshing end after the grilled dishes. I particularly love the texture of the almond sponge 👍
Overall, it was a great dinner (money well spent)! If you are looking for delicious lamb racks, this is a place that you shouldn't miss, I would recommend it even after the Singapore Restaurant Week has been concluded. Til the next time, bye bye!
