Once in a blue moon, our family will have a fancy dinner for really special occasions, when we are feeling extravagant. I need to have a post dedicated to such special moments (since the family has splurged on these meals). The rather high-end (at least to us) restaurants where we dined in the past year are summarised in the review below, for anyone who are interested in find out more.
Reservation is highly recommended for these places to avoid disappointment. Imagine that you are well-dressed with glamorous make-up and prepare to step into the restaurant, unfortunately the waiter/waitress stops you as tonight is a full house.... I would be so fed up! Moreover, for those who wish to admire beautiful city view by sitting at window seats, an early reservation is essential, especially during popular periods such as Parents' Day, Christmas or New Year Eve.
I would say drinks contribute substantially to the bill, particularly alcohols. Even if you skip the alcohol, you may have to pay quite a fair bit just for water, as water is charged by bottles. The waiters/waitresses will diligently top up drinking water for the guests. Unknowingly, your bill size is expanding tremendously :P

Firstly, we start with our luxurious dinner at Thirty8 for Mother's Day celebration in May 2018. Strategically located at the 38th floor of Grand Hyatt Hotel KL, the view here was promising, where the precious Petronas Twin Towers were in the sight.
The menu offers an eclectic range of food options for diners to choose from, ranging from Japanese, Chinese and Western cuisine. Sound great? There's just one caveat: the amount of food we ordered was not quite sufficient for 8 people. Expect to pay more for a filling meal, especially for those who have a big appetite.
Unfortunately, it was a gloomy evening without sunset.
Complimentary buns for a start.
Left: Assorted sashimi platter (thumbs up for the freshness)
Right: Signature House Salad.
We ordered multiple chef-recommended dishes on the menu for sharing, including THIRTY8 Signature Wok-fried Rice, Wok-fried Tiger Prawns, Grilled Tasmanian Salmon etc.
Funny looking dish but could you guess what these were? Imported white asparagus that was properly seasoned with salt and pepper, for us to enjoy the original taste and crunchiness of them!
The desserts here were yummy too! Introducing you the white chocolate-macadamia cheesecake topped with fresh blueberries.
THIRTY8 Signature Cake. One of my favourite dishes on that day.

Levelled up our game at Nobu KL, a Michelin- You can expect a unique dining experience with contemporary Japanese cuisine infused with South American flavours. We were extremely lucky to encounter one of the founders of Nobu, the well-known masterclass Chef Nobu Matsuhisa from Japan. That explained why the restaurant was particularly busy at that night. If your budget allows, we would recommend the special omakase menu uniquely designed and curated by Chef Nobu and the team, priced at RM595+ per pax.
Otherwise, you may follow in our footsteps by informing your estimated budget (with a minimum of RM350+ per pax) for the kitchen to prepare multiple signature dishes for group sharing. This also helps with indecisive people who are overwhelmed by the choices offered on the menu. :)
Sorry for the extremely blur photo due to the dim lighting. Fortunate girl who witnessed Chef Nobu in action!
Crispy Rice with Spicy Tuna.
Parrot fish two ways.
Black cod with miso - definitely the star of the show.
Rock Shrimp with Creamy Spicy Sauce.
Squid Kara-age.
Roasted Mushrooms with Tosazu Truffle Sauce.
There were actually 2 beef dishes served. However, I decided to place only one photo here because the dishes looked fairly similar. We asked for medium, and thankfully, the meat was still tender. One of them was too salty to my liking.
Assorted sushi rolls.
Nobu cheesecake, served with refreshing yuzu strawberry sorbet.
Yogurt ice-cream.
Chocolate sphere. Interesting combination of hot chocolate sauce, sake kasu ice-cream and flavoured crumbles. Tasted as good as it looked.
Address: 163, Fraser Place, No. 10 Jalan Perak, 50450 KL
Opening hours: 12pm to 3pm and 6pm to 11pm daily
Estimated damage per pax:
3 course menu: RM128++ (inclusive of your choices of appetizer, main course and dessert)
Degustation menu: RM350++ (inclusive of 7 appetizers, 1 main course of choice and 1 dessert of choice)
Compared to the two places mentioned above, the view here was not as captivating. However, this is probably the most cost-effective out of three (provided you order the 3-course dinner). We ordered degustation dinner for the birthday lady, and the conventional 3-course dinner for the rest of us. While ordering, please take note of the accompanying surcharges for certain dishes.
Let's move on to the food. There were so many appetisers served to my mum that I lost track of them. Hence, if you do not see any description for some dishes below, simply because I didn't manage to record down the dish name (and Skillet replaces their menu regularly). My sincere apologies for the sad truth that I forgot most of them!
Nonetheless, the dinner was spectacular and we went home with happy (and extremely full) stomachs.
Happy birthday, my dearest mum!
Degustation menu
Sourdough.
Home-cured Salmon. I was impressed by the taste and it's unusual to pair salmon with white fungus mushroom yet the combination was surprisingly pleasant.
Barramundi. Slow-cooked barramundi with Parsley and pistachio crumbles and citrus reduction. I love how the crumbs adding extra texture to the fish, not to mention the light and refreshing citrus sauce. My number one dish on that day~~~
Liquid Nitrogen Sorbet in progress.... The staff will prepare it at your table, so get your phone or camera ready!
Liquid Nitrogen Sorbet (Green Apple Flavour; to top up RM15++). You need to consume it within a short period of time as it melts quickly, unless you are looking for apple juice. :P
Strawberry | Rhurbab | White chocolate | Pistachio.
Signature Texture of Chocolate (to top up RM25++). You will be given a small hammer to crack open the chocolate sphere and reveal the delights awaiting inside. I am assured that most chocolate lovers will love this masterpiece given the chocolate taste is very rich yet not too sweet.
Complimentary desserts for birthday celebration!
